This Week’s STEAM Spotlight: “All About Me” Body Tracing
At Sunshine Montessori in San Juan Capistrano, our weekly STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activity brings our current unit of study—All About Me—to life in hands-on, joyful ways. This week, our children explored the wonders of the human body through a full-body tracing activity that touched on every part of STEAM learning.
Our STEAM Experience:
This week, each child lay down on a large sheet of paper while a friend carefully traced their body. From there, the learning unfolded across disciplines:
Science: Children explored basic human anatomy by identifying and labeling body parts. We discussed what makes each part unique and how our bodies help us move, think, and grow.
Technology: We introduced simple measuring tools like digital scales and height charts, helping children see how we use technology to gather information about our bodies.
Engineering: Children practiced spatial awareness and planning as they worked to fit their tracings on paper and considered how to represent their body parts in proportion.
Art: Using mirrors, crayons, and colored pencils, children added personal details like eye color, hair, and even clothing—expressing their creativity and individuality.
Math: We measured each child’s height and weight, compared sizes, and practiced using rulers and non-standard units (like counting blocks) to understand length.
Why It Matters
This all-in-one project helped children build self-awareness while reinforcing foundational STEAM concepts in a playful, age-appropriate way. By learning about themselves—how tall they are, what color their eyes are, how their body is shaped—they also learned how to ask questions, gather data, observe closely, and express their discoveries.
Looking Ahead
Our weekly STEAM projects continue to enrich our Montessori environment with meaningful, tactile learning experiences that inspire curiosity and confidence. We’re excited to see where our little learners go next in their journey of discovery!
